RRRR Boxcar #100.
According to Fred Deibert’s “Rails Up The Raritan”, #100 was the RRRR’s first steel boxcar. I’ve heard proposed build dates for this car spanning 1910 to 1936.
Here’s my story with respect to this car: It all started when I stumbled across a picture of this car when it was used as a makeshift storage shed and/or office at the Dillerville Yard in Lancaster PA:
http://crcyc.railfan.net/mow/storage/rr100.jpgThrilled to see that some old RRRR rolling stock still existed, I made a point to seek out this car the next time I was in the Lancaster PA area. Several years ago I did just that. However, after the sale of Conrail, Norfolk Southern had it removed. I was very lucky, though, to stumble across a small paragraph in Railpace magazine which mentioned that the car was moved to the Quakertown Train Station. After finding their website and contacting an individual there, I heard the story of how it came to make its new home at Quakertown PA.
It turns out that three people from the Quakertown Train Station Historical Society paid to have #100 moved by truck from Lancaster to Quakertown. Scheduled to be scrapped by NS, as soon as they heard about the car being available, within 10 minutes they made arrangements to acquire it. They plan to use it as a place to store things during their restoration of the station. They may someday restore the car, too.
So, I’ve since been meaning to visit Quakertown PA to see #100 again. However, an opportunity never arose…until now! As luck would have it, business travel brought me through that part of PA. On 05 Nov 2002, on my way to Elmira NY, I ventured off the PA Turnpike Extension and into Quakertown. I found the Station and #100. Considering how much of the RRRR that does NOT exist anymore, it felt really good seeing ol’ #100 again! See the attached photos!
